With only a few days left before the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, fans should\u00a0pay particular attention to this year\u2019s cycling events, which will feature bikes with 3D printed Jet One handlebars.\u00a0The French Cycling Federation, in association with Erpro & Sprint and S2A,\u00a0have\u00a0developed custom handlebars for seven of their french\u00a0athletes.<\/p>\n

Cyril Vue, CEO of\u00a0\u00a0Erpro & Sprint commented on the\u00a0project saying,\u00a0\u201cAdditive manufacturing technology\u00a0will premiere at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games alongside the French Team. To support the cyclists, Erpro & Sprint has created\u00a0seven full 3D printed handlebars.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Optimized performance<\/strong><\/p>\n

The\u00a0structure of the handlebars provide a very high rigidity and also significantly reduce the weight of the bikes. On the track, these bikes will reach top speeds\u00a0of\u00a0around 80 km\/h.<\/p>\n

Even before the Olympic Games, one\u00a0French athlete,\u00a0Thomas Boudat, had the pleasure of using the new handlebars during a race in Italy, in which he won first place!\u00a0This win will certainly bring a lot of hope to France\u2019s Olympic team in\u00a0the coming weeks.<\/p>\n

Recently, Dutch cyclist Tom Dumoulin \u2013 along with a team of researchers from TU Delft \u2013 used 3D printing and scanning technologies\u00a0to develop a\u00a0custom bodysuit<\/a>\u00a0for this year\u2019s Tour de France. Additionally,\u00a0British cyclist Bradley Wiggins shattered\u00a0record cycling times in London while also using \u00a03D printed handlebars back in June.<\/p>\n

Laser fusion technology<\/strong><\/p>\n

According to Marc Pajon, CEO of\u00a0S2A, the handlebars were created by combining aerospace and automotive processes.\u00a0Erpro & Sprint printed the bars on\u00a0a 280 SLM printer, operating with laser fusion technology.<\/p>\n

The French team is looking forward to what victories\u00a0these Jet One handlebars will afford their athletes in the Olympic Games. Essentially, the team is expecting to shave off a\u00a0few hundredths of a second from race times and hopefully bring many medals home for France.<\/p>\n
